John Emberton has been making knives for almost 40 years, since he built his first blade by cold forging a piece of steel with a 2.5 pound ball peen hammer and a chunk of railroad track for an anvil. From that humble beginning John has come a long way in his craft. His workshop at Mockingbird Hill is packed with specialized tools (many of which were built by John himself), which are used to create beautiful knives from high quality steel and a wide range of handle materials kept in stock at the site. These knives vary in appearance, from the mountain man's rugged tool to the collector's display quality art - but every single one is as tough as they come, razor sharp, and guaranteed against everything but loss or rust. If your knife breaks, send it to John and he'll make you a new one, free of charge. Each piece also comes with a custom-fit sheath, hand crafted from high quality cowhide (Other types of leather are available for custom orders). Unless otherwise noted, all the blades on this site have a single-side hollow grind (a technique that became popular in Europe and the Americas in the sixteenth century). Most are made from L6 High Carbon Tool Steel, 3/16ths of an inch thick, although some, such as the smaller skinners, paring or fillet knives, are made from M2 High Speed Tool Steel of varying thickness ( all of which are much thinner than L6 steel). Both types of steel have a Rockwell rating of 60. Also, John has recently begun creating Damascus blades using several types of quality steel. Each knife on this page is Johns' work, custom made for a client or built for display and sale at gun and knife shows. Mockingbird Hill Knives typically maintains a small stock of certain types of blades for sale, such as the small pelters and skinners. We have included in our knife galleries, pictures not only of pieces that are for sale at Mockingbird Hill, but some examples of custom knives built to client specifications, to give potential customers an idea of the wide range of blade styles, handle types, and materials used at Mockingbird Hill. If you don't see what you want here, that doesn't mean Mockingbird Hill doesn't make it - give John a call and visit with him about your dream knife - chances are, he can make it a reality. |
